Reading and Writing

I love books and I love reading. I don’t read as much since I started writing books at the start of the year, but I used to read every night before I fell asleep. In the summer I might go down to the docks and read a bit at the end of the day. I bought a blackberry Playbook on a sale in Dec 2011 to use as an e-reader when I traveled so I wouldn’t have to pack the novel I was reading. That allowed me to buy ebooks or download them from the library and now I can carry loads of reading material. That’s a thrill for a reader.

I read thrillers, mysteries, crime novels and just about any book that catches my eye at the library when I visit. I used to read a lot of science fiction but that has been limited to Star Trek novels for some time now. I’m not sure why. One of the best science fiction books I ever read was Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard. The Rama series by Arthur C Clarke was another favorite.

I’ve read every book Clive Cussler has put out. I’ve been recently going through books by James Patterson. But I also like John Grisham, James Rollins, Matthew Reilly, Jeremy Robinson, Lincoln Child, Brad Thor, John le Carre, Harlan Coben, Jeffrey Deaver, Ian Rankin, Lawrence Block, Kathy Reichs, John Sandford…well, you get the idea.

I don’t need a book to teach me something, I just need it to entertain me. That’s what I’m trying to do with my own writing. I know you need to have a theme or a central focus but I think you really just need to tell a good story. Or entertain the reader to help them forget their troubles for the day. I think that’s why Steven Spielberg has been so successful with his movies. He’s a great storyteller. I know he has messages within many of his movies, but at the end of the day it’s not in your face and you’re entertained for several hours.

Amazon and the Kindle have opened up a whole new world for people who want to write and publish. Legacy publishers have held the keys to the kingdom for a long time and rejected 99% of the people who hoped to see their work reach the public. Indie publishers now have an avenue. I only hope I can entertain people as much as the writers I’ve mentioned here.
